Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP

Principal

Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP is the founding partner of Dougherty. Ms. Dougherty established the firm in 1979, with an emphasis on design excellence and sustainability for public facilities. She has been actively involved in the American Institute of Architects since 1976.  She served as local Chapter President in 1984, California Council President in 1988, National AIA Director from 1989 to 1991, and National AIA Secretary from 1993 to 1994.  She served the AIA College of Fellows as Chancellor in 2004. Ms. Dougherty has been a Committee Chair for the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, a member of National Charity League, a member of the City of Newport Beach Specific Area Plan Committee, and a former member of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Career Educational Advisory Committee. She currently serves as a member of the California Architect’s Board Professional Qualifications Committee, and an Executive Committee Member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture. Betsey actively supports mentoring through the firm’s commitment to diversity, and to the completion of the AXP program for licensure. She earned her undergraduate and Master’s Degree in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley.

Brian Paul Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP

Principal

Brian Paul Dougherty, FAIA, LEED BD+C is a Senior Partner at Dougherty, specializing in the planning and design of contemporary educational, institutional, commercial, and healthcare facilities. Mr. Dougherty contributes over forty years of experience in providing architectural services. He contributes a career-long emphasis in energy conservation and sustainable design to each project, including a focus on holistic resource conservation. He is a founding practicing architect member of the California Board of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). His credentials in this area have led to his role as a spokesperson for the architectural profession in State and National dialogue on the subject. His service to the AIA over the years at the Local, State and National levels has included Regional Director to the National Board and National Secretary from 1996 to 1998. Mr. Dougherty served as the 1986 Orange County Chapter President, AIACC Secretary in 1988, a Trustee of the AIACC Benefit Insurance Trust, and a member of the AIA Regional/Urban Design Committee. His service to the AIA California Council has continued as President in 2014, and member of the National AIA Strategic Council from 2015-2017. Mr. Dougherty earned his undergraduate and Master’s Degree in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley, and MBA from U.C. Irvine.

Joe LoBasso, AIA, CSI, CDT, CCS, LEED Green Associate

Senior Associate

Joe LoBasso, AIA, is a Senior Associate and Project Manager with Dougherty, overseeing the day-to-day operations of staff. His overall expertise is in school and public facilities design and construction, and he has been recognized by school districts throughout California. He has developed design standards, specifications, and BIM guidelines for the firm, and for the two largest School Districts in California. He has also spearheaded BIM modeling integration throughout the firm, working with consultants to integrate structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical design into a model that is useful to the builder and the owner.  Mr. LoBasso has extensive experience with the California Building Code and communicates revisions and changes to staff. He is the office quality control manager and has maintained a high level of quality in every project that leaves the office. He continually works to improve quality of the documents through training, use of technology and software, and experience. He actively promotes collaboration between the client, contractor, consultants, sales representatives and vendors, and conducts the Dougherty in-house continuing education program. Joe is a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona will a B.S. in Architecture, and an Masters degree in Business from Long Beach State University.

Seung Paek, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

Associate

Seung Paek is an Associate, Project Manager, and Architect for Dougherty. He supervises the our in-house production staff and coordinates the work of consulting engineers. Seung contributes over twelve years of California educational facilities project experience to Dougherty. Mr. Paek is personally experienced in taking 3D Revit modeling software into the field, and maintains direct involvement in the preparation of designs, construction documents, specifications and cost estimates.  He is also involved in coordination and plan checking with all applicable agencies, and provides oversight and coordination throughout construction administration. Mr. Paek has led the LEED Gold Irvine Valley College New Life Sciences Building, the LEED Gold Saddleback College New Science Building, and the new ATEP Campus for the South Orange County Community College District. In this capacity, he contributes recent successful approval process experience with the State Chancellor’s Office, and has built a productive and successful relationship with the Division of the State Architect. Seung is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Akiko Ozaki, AIA, LEED AP

Associate

Ms. Ozaki is an Associate, Project Manager, and firm BIM Revit expert and mentor, and is presently using Revit and Navisworks BIM/Integrative Project Delivery techniques in the field. Ms. Ozaki is a graduate of Woodbury University, with a Master of Architecture from Columbia University in New York.  She has experience working with State agencies, including the Division of the State Architect , the Office of Public School Construction and the California Department of Education. As a LEED Accredited Professional, Ms. Ozaki ensures that sustainable strategies are successfully implemented for efficient and effective maintenance and operations. She leads the in-house DIG (Digital Information Group), positioning the firm to remain at the forefront of the digital movement, and maintaining a high standard for the maintenance and implementation of  state-of-the-art company hardware and software programs.

Diego Matzkin, AIA, LEED AP

Associate

Diego Matzkin is an Associate, Project Manager, and licensed architect with more than 20 years of extensive experience in management, production and construction of municipal, educational and state funded projects of various scales and complexity. He has been involved through all stages of a project’s life cycle, from the early phases of planning, programming and community outreach to the preparation of construction documents, construction administration, and project closeout. Diego’s expertise includes budget and schedule management, program development with user groups, oversight and quality of architectural/engineering design and construction documents. Coordination with specialty consultants, contract management and negotiation, processing of governmental jurisdiction approvals and business development activities also fall under his jurisdiction. Mr. Matzkin has designed and maintains in-house project management tools for Dougherty. Diego earned his undergraduate degree in architecture at U.C. Berkeley, and his Master of Architecture at UCLA.

Matt Gummow, AIA

Associate

Matt is an Associate and Architect who values collaborative and iterative creative processes and believes great building design engages with the site. He is a former Valedictorian of the NewSchool of Architecture + Design, where he earned his Master of Architecture degree. Matt is a leader in designing through the BIM process, utilizing a holistic approach to professional design services, and skilled in the application of a variety of modeling, rendering, and animation tools. He is personally involved in the preparation of BIM generated design and construction documents, and works closely with consulting engineers to support document coordination and quality control. In the early phases of design, Matt is a thoughtful leader in the master planning and programming of civic facilities, with the skills to translate visionary thinking into reality. He is a valued mentor to others within the firm in both offices.

Steve Parker, AIA

Associate

Steve Parker is an Associate, Project Manager and Architect with more than 32 years of experience working on a wide range of projects focused on educational architecture.  He graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He works with consultants to integrate structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing design into working BIM models. He understands the critical nature of data gathering, site analysis, prioritization, cost estimating, technology, community outreach/participation and the funding assistance necessary to complete and implement projects on schedule and within budget. Mr. Parker supports the mentoring and internship training for Dougherty designers and technicians. He is a co-leader of the Dougherty Oakland Studio, supporting a talented group of architects and designers to serve our valued Northern California clientele.

Lance Kutz, Associate AIA

Associate

Mr. Kutz, an Associate and Project Manager, holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the California College of the Arts, bringing more than fifteen years of experience to the Dougherty team. His strength lies in fostering strong professional relationships and providing clients with creative design solutions. After a long career working at Shah Kawaski Architects, Lance has joined the Dougherty team as an Oakland Studio team leader where he continues to cultivate a strong understanding of the public process and show leadership in problem solving. Lance is an effective representative to specialty client-centered organizations, and is actively involved with his community. He is BIM proficient, and mentors architectural staff in design and construction documentation.
